Definitely need this still - we just had to add a custom button that runs a stored procedure and had to create a separate checkbox to act as a flag for whether or not the button has been clicked, and I had to use Benjamin's suggestion to disable input on this box.
If you're comfortable in the SQL database, just go into the DDFIc view and modify the "DisableInput" column for the custom field you want to turn off entry for.

While you are reviewing, maybe address Custom Buttons for this, too.
