It would be great to have compliance code types, and to be able to create a report for insurance type compliance codes with a range of expiration dates. It's okay for other compliance codes to be flagged when trying to pay a sub, but we need to know about insurance before it expires so the progress of work is not disrupted.

Just to followup on Anne's comment, there's already a canned Workflow notifier: "SL Compliance Warning" that does this for you if you have the Workflow module.
We've had a custom WF Notifier created for me that sends an email to the vendor and myself 10 days prior to the policy expiry date. I also have another notifier that emails me weekly with a list of out of compliance vendors with the code for what is out of date. I still have to manually follow up any that are overdue, but it has simplified the process enormously.
