With all the fraud that is occurring around the globe, specifically within the U.S., recipient's data needs to be protected since a high percentage of the 1099 MISC that we generate are SSN's. Therefore, the recipient would benefit. To truncate where allowed, replace the first 5 digits of the 9-digit number with asterisks(*) or X's, for example, a SSN would appear on the paper statement as ***-**-1234 or XXX-XX-1234. The statements that have to be filed (paper or electronic) with the IRS would still have the full identification number.

Agree....W2's also...one of our employees had his W2 stolen from his mailbox, and the thief attempted to open credit accounts using the info on the W2.
