We are self-hosted with no intention of cloud operations. To REQUIRE that we install Vista Remote Link makes our Vista operations a ridiculous set-up. No one is allowed remote access to anything for us, so we install the Reverse Proxy Server, change the direction of the client launcher, so user transactions go back and forth to and from the server to the Vista server makes no sense.

Thank you for your feedback regarding VRL. We appreciate your position. Though we understand your view, it is unfortunately something with which we cannot agree.
To address this a little more fully, we are not asking people to start using VRL on-premise solely as a means improve remote access or to assist with our cloud hosting. There are a number of additional key reasons why Vista Remote Link (VRL) is the technology of choice for connectivity to Vista in the future:
Improved security: All connections from the Vista client to the VRL proxy server are encrypted and signed by default using HTTPS.
Long Term API Availability: Moving to VRL enables us to more effectively develop APIs in Vista. This has been a critical priority for many of our customers.
Potential for Performance Improvements: By consolidating the initial requests submitted by our client applications to a single, reverse proxy server, this helps with the goal of moving business logic and client-side communication to the app server. This in turn frees up the database server to focus on data storage and retrieval. By off-loading connection work from the database to a separate machine, we can improve performance, especially over the long run.
Focus of Development work: Supporting multiple, redundant connection mechanisms in Vista is in-efficient. Doing so takes resources that could be focused on delivering new Vista functionality and instead applies them to maintaining the LAN connection mechanism, which then needs to be tested and validated against each supported version of Vista and each supported SQL database version (currently 2017, 2016, and 2014).
This is all in addition to the increased remote access possibilities for on-premise customers and cloud-access improvements for our cloud-hosted customers.
In summary, the benefits of moving to the VRL connection mechanism only for Vista clients far outweighs that of maintaining the older LAN connection mechanism.
As such, we will be continuing with this technology upgrade. While I would love to continue supporting the LAN connection mechanism far out into the future, things change and technology must advance. We are socializing this shift now to give our customers lots of warning. From today, our customers have approximately 10-16 months to move to VRL as a connection mechanism, so this gives plenty of time to make that move.
Please let us know directly if you have any questions or would like some advice and recommendations on how to make the shift to VRL on-premise for your specific situation.
