Currently there is no way to archive attachments and keep the transaction links for retrieval through reporting. The current way of archiving is to make a copy of the documents and deleting them from Vista. This breaks the attachment link and you won't be able to find the document according to the transaction. This is completely useless.
So the only way to keep your transactions and documents relevant is to just let your File system or VPAttachments database continue to grow continuously for eternity. A large VPAttachments is cumbersome to backup, maintain, and suffers performance issues. Eventually it will be unsustainable which makes Vista as a product, unsustainable to use for the long term.
I think an appropriate way to address this would be a function to archive attachments to the File System, or secondary SQL Database. This way we wouldn’t have to run a backup on a 500Gb database every night, keep the links, and backup only a fraction of VPAttachments, while the remaining are archived separately.
But anything to make the VPAttachments database more manageable would work.
