Currently, the field allows 10 digits but is limited to a maximum value of 2147483647 by the data type. This will be a problem soon for users having the first 2 digits being the YY.

Is there any update of this issue/problem? As we are at the point, where there are only a year more to go.
If you are basing the work order number off a timestamp instead of straight up sequential, you could use the format YYYYMMDD99 (with the 99 being 00-99) and store up 100 per day until we reach the year 2147. (A good 127 years from now). One hopes that they will upgrade to a new system by then.
But since whoever started your numbering scheme used only two digits for the year (did they learn nothing from Y2K?) then that does seem to be a bit of an issue.
I don't know your numbering scheme, but if you are currently at something like 2,005,080,000, you could switch to SEQUENTIAL (not timestamp based) WO numbers and have about 142 million left to go.
I'd suggest asking your company to make that change if they can. That way even if VP does nothing about this issue, you're still good to go for a few more years.
