Fix grid filtering to pull data from all 'pages'

Say you are using the default install "page size" of 500, and the database table contains 5,000 records.

Now, type something into one of the filters that you know exists, just not in the first page.

You get no results. In fact, you may have to hit the LEFT/RIGHT page buttons through several "blank pages" before your filter results magically appear. This is slow and not user friendly.

I don't think this is what users expect when they do a filter. It's certainly not what the 5 users sitting near me expected after this update!

My Suggestion for Vista Filtering

  • "Filter" the current page as you currently do
  • also do a DB query to grab results from the other pages and append them into the view, as long as the number of displayed rows is still below your page size.

That way the "Page Size" acts more like a Max number of rows I want to see on the screen at a time, and still shows relevant data when searched.

For now I've upped our VA Site Settings "page size" to 5000, but would love to see the above solution implemented so we don't have to worry about data missing from grids.

Eric, will this solution be available to self-hosted customers too?

You are correct , Nathan.  We did raise the paging size once again to effectively turn off paging.  This is due to what is described in this suggestion, the current grid filter has no visibility into the entire record set - only the pages that are loaded into the grid component.  We are working on some required security enhancements and other items for this next release, but hope to look at the grid filter's way that it accesses data in another release or two.

Mindi, if you're still looking for a solution, the "Max Number of Rows" setting is in VA Site Settings. I think the spring release set the "Page Size" number back to something huge like 50,000 (basically turns off paging).

VP: I'm still hoping that you'll revisit the "paging" idea, and turn it into more of a "show first X records that match filters/searches".

Nathan, how did you bump up your default page size?  We are still at a page size of 500 and so the filters aren't working on the other pages of our grid and we are all going crazy over this..... thanks so much!

Thanks Andre. But not all fields are allowed in the 'search' area (even if the checkbox for that field to be included is checked in F3). VP says they are working on a better solution.

Nathan, to get a field to show up in form search you need to press F3 in the field and go to System Overrides and select Include in Form Search.

Thanks for the quick response! I did experiment with the search (magnifying glass) but found it quite limited in what fields I could use, and when you 'clear' the fields you have to hit 'search' to get all the records back again. I'm glad you guys are revisiting the whole searching/filtering approach.

I've now bumped our default page size up to 50,000 to account for a 40,000+ IN Mat Locations table we have, and am looking forward to Vista's "Next Act" in this area.

We hear you on this one.  Filtering works at the grid level, so if the page with the data you want has not be loaded in the grid, the filter won't "see" that data.  Searching / Form Search works at the record set level, performing the full database query that you might be expecting.

Specifically, for this release, we focused on getting paging out the door, but for our "next act" we will be significantly enhancing the ways that we find data in Vista.  Part of that will be to improve the way that searching / filtering and grids work together.  Stay tuned for some cool stuff in the next few months.

In the meantime, you can use form search to run a query on the entire record set, which will load the grid with the specific items that you would be expecting.
