As an example, contract item 81.1 will not follow contract item 81 but be placed at the end of the report. The issue appears to be that the contract item is a text field which causes it not to sort numerically.

Your suggestion to use a different numbering system would work except many of us use the owner's numbering system. This is common with D.O.T. contractors. Consequently, I still think it makes sense for these to be number and not text fields. Thank you.
Yes. Vista uses character length for sorting as well. TO solve that issue we have created a separate numbering scheme. A001 = 81, A002 = 81.1 (for example) We have items like A2b.i and A2b.ii.
I do like the 1010, 1020 suggestion from Andre as well.
That's correct it is a text field, because companys such as mine use VXXX for change orders/variations.
The best way to avoid this though, is instead of using 1,2,3,4,5,6 etc
Use 1010, 1020, 1030, 1040 etc, then if you need to add another one, you can enter 1015 and it will place it in the middle.
