What is the first thing you do after tapping 'TAB' and getting an error message that a field failed validation?
Making this automatic for any field with a validation level of "Do not leave field" would save a lot of frustration, especially if the text already in the field was put into the filter bar at the top of the F4 lookup (like it currently operates: type text in a field, tap F4, filter bar contains text already typed).
This is a simple addition in coding, but it would change the user experience a little. Instead of seeing a somewhat annoying error message, they would get a USEFUL next-action lookup.
If changing the user interface this much is scary, how about turning this feature on/off via a checkbox in the field properties? I'd imagine it named something like "Show Lookup Instead Of Validation Error".

Clarification
When the F4 lookup automatically opens
This allows the user to then hit BACKSPACE a couple times to see if perhaps they were looking for a different item ending in a different number/letter, without having to enter it all in again, or click with the mouse..etc.
