Perhaps should be considered as an enhancement. For users who add these types of custom fields, where a value is required, for check boxes, there are 3 choices, Y, N and null. Already existing records, will take on a Null value, since the choice has not yet been made, hence the error. The enhancement would be to allow users the option of setting all pre-existing records to either Y or N when the custom field is being added. They do not get an error message like this until they try and make edits to the already existing record.
